FSC® paper

It may not seem obvious at first sight, but nowadays paper is one of the most sustainable products in our daily life. Of course, you have to take a number of things into account to put it into good practice. At Opmeer, sustainability is one of our most important topics. Our entire operation is designed for sustainability, whereby the processing of certified paper such as FSC® and PEFC™ is (just) one part of our complete supply chain.

What does the FSC® quality mark stand for?

FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) stands for responsible forest management. This means the ecological, social and economic aspects associated with forest management are taken into account in a balanced manner. FSC® is an international organization and operates worldwide.

Wood, and other tree-based products, sourced from forests can undergo many processes before they become a product. This means that every link in the supply chain must be certified. Producers who process FSC® wood for a diversity of products, must comply with requirements and rules. Only when a forest manager, paper factory, paper wholesaler or - like Opmeer - a graphic media company can demonstrate that they comply with the rules of FSC®, a product can be sold as an FSC® product and the FSC® label can be placed on it. In short, FSC® chain of custody certification tracks FSC®-certified material from forest to final product. The certification is carried out by independent certifiers.

What does an FSC® quality mark mean on printed matter?

In order to make a joint contribution to responsible forest management and the growth of the forest area in the world, we advise our clients to opt for responsible products. After all, thanks to the responsible management of a forest area, the less risk there is for forests to disappear because of the construction of palm oil plantations or mining.

In terms of certification of good forest management, we count 400 million hectares. That seems like a lot, but it is only 10% of the world forest area. By choosing a sustainable paper and placing the FSC® label on your printed materials, you also contribute to the awareness and demand for products from these sustainably managed forests.
